The torma artists arrived in Bodhgaya around December 5th and began working immediately in their workspaces inside the Bhutanese Temple complex.

His Holiness arrived in Bodhaya about a week later. After settling in to his residence at Tergar Monastery, the Karmapa paid a visit to the Mahabodhi Stupa in the center of the town. The Stupa was built right in front of the Bodhi tree where the Buddha achieved enlightenment some 2,500 years ago. It is regarded as perhaps the most sacred of all pilgrimage spots to the various schools of Buddhism.  

After visiting the Stupa, the Karmapa went to the Bhutanese Temple to check out the progress of the monk and nun torma artists and to offer suggestions and guidance.

In the weeks before the Monlam began, while the torma artists were busily working at the Bhutanese Temple, Karma Kagyu monks from monasteries all over India and Nepal gathered at Tergar Monastery to debate each other and receive Madhyamika teachings directly from His Holiness. During this pre-Monlam period, we conducted torma interviews with His Holiness Karmapa and Venerable Mingyur Rinpoche.
